Creatures along for the Ride
We lifted anchor on Sunday 1 September from French Guiana heading toward Trinidad, another 7 days at sea, bring it on we got this. The weather in Trinidad right now seems a little stormy, however it looks as though it will be clear as we get closer.
Our first night back on watch straight after sunset, we discovered a couple of unwanted crawling creatures, we all freaked out and got the youngest and most flexible human on board to climb onto some awkward spaces to deal with these unwanted pests, clearly there is really not much one can do when out on the ocean without some solid pest control.
A new evening with new creatures, this time a little more pleasant, as I came up for my shift the next evening, I was greeted by the most beautiful beasties, which at first terrified me to be honest, until I realised, ( thanks to google) they were harmless, I mean we are hanging around the amazon who knows what is out here. According to Makyla there have even been cannibals lurking around this jungle at some point in time. 😳 ( This is a fact by the way) Anyway back to my beautiful creatures, that somehow found their way onto our boat to hitch a ride to somewhere. There were about 10 Amazonian moths along for a night sail, formally known as Urania Leiluas. They are truly beautiful and so perfect, with chiselled edges and gorgeous shades of green and oh so photogenic.
Gods creatures just keep coming new day new pet, the cutest little bird, maybe something like a sparrow, clearly on some kind of migration mission, I think he may have lost his flock, naturally everyone on board is an animal lover so off to the rescue we go, with water, shelter and some seeds that we think may be helpful.
After some google re-search I have come to the google conclusion that this may be a warble of some sort, they migrate extremely long distances and there are many reason why they end up on boats, exhaustion, hunger, disorientation and thirst, they cannot drink sea water as it is deadly actually. Then of course as most of you know, I am full of personal opinions, I think, they get sea sick when they get on the boat, so actually they should just keep flying. Since we love animals we loved and nurtured our Captain Beek for a solid 2 days and he finally passed away with me stroking his head 😍 at least he knew he was loved ❤️ He was then sent to sea to fly with the sea angels.
