Kolmanskop

Yesterday we decided to rent a car and explore a little futher away, we headed to Kolmanskop, a ghost town swallowed by the Namib dessert, which was really interesting, and kind of creepy all at the same time. I think we all enjoyed it more than we through we would.

You do no need much of an imagination to be transported into a world of long ago, when the streets of Kolmanskop where buzzing with people becoming extremely wealthy over night, with diamonds glistering in the dessert. This shimmer was an incredible short lived situation, as people flooded into the dessert and built it up into a spectacular town from 1912 and by the 1930's the diamond boom for Kolmanskop had ended, it was completely depleted and by 1956 it was a ghost town where the dessert was reclaiming its space.

There is a rather tainted history behind the rise and fall of this town, please read about it. it is actually very interesting.

I highly recommend visiting Kolmanskop if you ever find yourself in this corner of the world. It also makes for some really good photo opportunities.

On our way back from Kolmanskop, we took a drive through the dessert and along the coast, where the wild and beautiful dessert meets the sea, with its uniquely beautiful landscape, some areas feel and look like you could be on the moon, its so hard to explain and I don't think I had much success in capturing it on camera.

One of our stops was the historic Dias Point, where Bartholomew Dias erected a stone cross over 300 years ago to mark the Portuguese presence. Standing there, with the wind whipping off the Atlantic. The cross has weathered centuries of storms and shifting sands and is certainly a symbol of endurance, exploration and resilience. A reminder to always take the road less travelled.

After enjoying the coastal drive,  we swung by the yacht club for a quick  shower, then headed out for dinner. We ended up at the so called best seafood restaurant in town, though to be honest the meal was pretty underwhelming, 😭🙈 It seems Lüderitz's charm doesn't extend to its cuisine.! But hey, not every adventure can be about 5 star dinning.

We wrapped up the night with one last drink at the yacht club. Evenings in Lüderitz are short and sweet everything shuts down by 22:00 😂  It's a little odd, but there is something wholesome about it too. Maybe it's just the towns way of making sure everyone gets a little family time.
